Hotel Tips

Sanitizing/Disinfecting

No matter how clean the toilet looks at the hotel you are staying at, there is no guarantee that it isn’t really hiding some germ determined to ruin your trip. To be safe, you may wish to spray the seat with a spray or wipe it off with a wipe containing an antimicrobial essential oil or blend before using it. Some antimicrobial oils or blends are Protective Blend, melaleuca, clove, oregano, thyme, cinnamon, helichrysum, peppermint, Cleansing Blend, and lime. Other areas that may need sanitizing are door handles and light switches since they may be touched frequently.

Making it Feel Like Home

In her book The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy, Valerie Worwood recommends using a familiar-smelling essential oil to help make a hotel room smell more like home in order to help younger children adjust to the new surroundings (p. 47).

Studies have shown that certain aromas can help a space feel warm and inviting, while other aromas, like orange, can help relax and reduce anxiety. Some calming/relaxing oils include lavender, Calming Blend, ylang ylang, Roman chamomile, wild orange, sandalwood, and rose. Some uplifting/inviting oils are lemon, grapefruit, wild orange, lime, and other citrus scents. Diffuse one or more of these oils in your hotel room to create the environment you desire.

Unpleasant Smells

If you don't like the smell of the room, you can change it by adding a 5-8 drops of your favorite essential oil to 1 oz of water in a spray bottle and mist around the room.

Sleeping/Relaxation Tips

Sometimes traveling or being in an unfamiliar hotel room can make it difficult to sleep. Some soothing oils include lavender, Calming Blend, ylang ylang, Roman chamomile, clary sage, orange, Invigorating Blend, vetiver, geranium, melissa, sandalwood, bergamot, and rose. The following are some tips from the book, Modern Essentials (p. 42), on how to use these essential oils to aid relaxation and sleep:

- "I use [Invigorating Blend] and water in spray bottle for sheets, pillows and other furniture to cleanse, freshen and kill dust mites. I also use lemon with [Cleansing Blend] and water in spray bottle to wipe down counters, light switches, telephone, remote and other things I need to touch in the room. And [Calming Blend] in my diffuser to help us sleep at night." - Annette Mattace Gough (Elko, NV)
