Transluscent Window Diffusers

Bath Salts

These beautiful transluscent diffusers cling to any glass window, and gently release the aroma of your chosen essential oil into the room as the sun warms the window. Make any shape you desire to decorate for a holiday or special occassion!

Materials:

  1. White School Glue: Use regular white school, such as Elmers® brand white glue. Do not use the washable or gel types as they will not work for this project. White school glue can be found at any store that carries school, office, or craft supplies.
  2. Aroma Pads: These pads are used to hold and release the essential oils.
  3. Food Coloring: This is used to color your window diffusers. Regular liquid food coloring can be found at most grocery stores in the baking or spice section.
  4. Plastic Dropper Bottles (1/2 oz.): These dropper bottles are used to mix and apply different colors of glue to your window diffuser.
  5. Clear Transparency Sheets: Transperancy sheets (such as those used with overhead projectors) can be found at most stores that sell office supplies. These will serve as your "canvas" to create your window diffusers on.
  6. Essential Oils: Choose your favorite essential oil or blend to match the season or your mood.

Instructions:

  1. For each color you desire to have in your window diffuser, fill a plastic dropper bottle about 3/4 of the way full with white school glue. Add 2-4 drops of your desired food coloring to each bottle and stir together until thoroughly blended. Insert the plastic tip into each bottle and then screw the cap onto each plastic dropper bottle tightly until ready to use.
  2. Draw or find a shape or picture you would like to use for your window diffuser on a regular sheet of paper.
  3. Place the transparency sheet on top of the shape or picture you would like to use. If the transparency sheet you are using has a rough side and a smooth side (as some printable transparency sheets do), make sure that the smooth side is facing up.
  4. Carefully squeeze the colored glue out of the dropper bottles onto the transparency sheet, filling in the shape or picture you wish to create. It is easiest to start with the smallest details first, and then fill in around them with the larger details. Make certain the glue stays in an even layer across the whole picture and that there are no gaps without glue.
  5. Once the picture or shape is entirely filled in, cut one of the Aroma Pads to match a small part of the picture or shape and carefully place it into the colored clue in the desired location. Be careful not to push the Aroma Pad all the way through the layer of glue
  6. Allow the window diffuser to dry for 24 hours or until completely dry.
  7. To use the diffuser, carefully peel the picture or shape from the transparency sheet. Press the diffuser firmly onto any smooth glass window facing the sun until it sticks. Add a few of drops of your desired essential oil to the Aroma Pad. As the sun shines on the window, it will warm the Aroma Pad and release the essential oil into the air. Recharge the diffuser with additional oil as often as desired.

Extra Ideas

  1. To give these window diffusers as gifts, leave them on the tranparency sheets and cut out the transparency sheet around the window diffuser. Place the window diffuser in a ziploc bag along with a small vial of your favorite essential oils or blend. Add a gift tag or header card to the bag with instructions on how to use the diffuser and information about the essential oil.
  2. If you are using a courser salt that may take longer do dissolve, you may want to make a small bag with a drawstring out of a fine mesh material to place the salt in. This bag can then be filled with the correct amount of bath salts and hung on the spout of the tub with the drawstring so that the bag is underneath the water that is coming from the spout. This will help speed the dissolving process, and will also keep the un-dissolved salt out of the tub.
  3. Try layering different colored salts in clear glass jars to create some neat effects.
